HISTORY
As a cartographer by profession, my passion lies in making maps. As a sports fan, my hobby includes visiting stadiums and as a creative person, I really enjoy bringing cartography and sports together. Since 2019 I have been setting up MeydenMaps, a hobby that has gotten out of hand since I registered at the Chamber of Commerce.
After graduating from the Bachelor in Human Geography & Urban Planning at the University of Amsterdam in 2016, I went into cartography. The international MSc Cartography has shown me how interesting, versatile and attractive a career in the world of cartography can be. Since a few years I have been working on all sorts of paper maps; from city maps to street atlases, bicycle maps, personalised maps for hotels and municipalities, large-scale as well as small-scale and from the Netherlands as well as from Germany and Belgium. Most products are to be published in bookstores and tourist information offices, though many can one also admire outside at the side of the road ;)
Every so often I make a map in my free time, on request or simply because I like to to learn something new and therefore go beyond what I have made so far. It all started at the Cartography Master programme, where I have deepened my understanding of every type of map and the use, possibilities and difficulties on various platforms. In these years that cartography has taken a prominent place in my life, I have experimented extensively with geographical data, GIS programmes and visualisation of geographical data with Adobe products. Under the 'portfolio' tab I have separated a decent part of my work in various selections.
ON THIS WEBSITE
In 'In Store' you will find the maps I have updated, made and/or developed. Most of these products can be bought in stores on- and offline. As the author, I take a huge part of my satisfaction in actually being able to hold the product in hand; having a physical product as an end result and thereby helping the map user to find their way in a pleasant and comfortable way.
In the remaining selections a myriad of maps can be found. Some of these are made for friends, some for myself and the rest to sell online. 'Stadium Maps' is what I call my "corona project" and focuses on the visualisation of (more or less) prominent sport stadiums in a geographical context. Next down the line are the 'Minimal Maps', where each map consists only of the letters and place names of the projected area. These cartographic word puzzles are both made for decorating purposes as well as for many a playful moment. Remaining are the 'educational maps', which are specifically created for use in schools, and 'various maps' of several maps made in university and afterwards.
